WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team defeated 43rd-ranked Lady Tigers in Columbia, Mo., today.
Head coach Mat Iandolo and the Boilermakers are excited about their win.
"This was a great win on the road in a hostile environment," Iandolo said. "The women stayed focused and achieved their goal of defeating Missouri.
Next week we expect everyone to be healthy as we open the conference season."
Purdue began the match by winning the doubles point.
At the No. 2 spot, senior Melissa Iqbal and junior Melissa Woods defeated Lucie Rushova and Kristina Olshanskaya 8-2. Sophomores Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini upended Mary Barry and Hana Kraftova 8-5 in the third position.
In singles, Zuccarini defeated Ruskova 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Burgarello scored the third point for the Boilermakers in fourth position after defeating Barry 6-4, 6-4. Junior Gretchen Haynor clinched the match after upending Katka Sevcikova 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Purdue ended the day with a 4-1 overall record and 2-0 on the road. The Boilermakers will open their conference season on the road on Feb. 15 and 16 when they face Minnesota and Iowa.
