HOMESTEAD, Fla. - The Purdue baseball team opened the 2003 campaign with a close 8-7 loss to Pittsburgh Friday night at the Papa John's Homestead Challenge.
The Boilermakers spotted the Panthers a 7-0 lead, giving up three runs in the first and third and one in the fourth. The Old Gold and Black battled back to tie it at seven with two runs in the sixth, one in the eighth and four in the ninth.
Tyler Johnstone led the Purdue offense, going 5-for-5 in his first game as a Boilermaker, while Simon Klink went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Klink singled in the ninth to drive in the tying run, while Daniel Underwood went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
T.J. Gornati picked up the win for Pittsburgh, while Jason Driscoll dropped to 0-1 on the season for Purdue.
The Boilermakers are scheduled to meet Detroit at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Boston College at 7 p.m. Probable pitchers for the Old Gold and Black are Luke Howard and Scott Byrnes.
