WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For the second straight match the Purdue women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to a Big Ten opponent on the road. On Sunday, No. 61 Iowa claimed the one-point victory over the 46th-ranked Boilermakers. A day earlier, No. 50 Minnesota eked out the win.
Just as they had on Saturday against the Golden Gophers, the Boilermakers claimed the doubles point. Sophomore Lara Burgarello and Brittany Reitz won 8-3 at No. 2, while junior Melissa Woods and senior Melissa Iqbal won 8-3 at No. 3.
Iowa struck first in singles, winning in the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots. Purdue sophomore Amy Walgenbach snapped the Hawkeyes' win streak with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Deni Alexandrova. But a three-set win by Iowa's Chelsea Glynn over Burgarello at No. 5 sealed the match for the Iowa. Senior Missy Wright added a victory at No. 6 after the outcome was decided.
Purdue is now 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers will return to the court on Feb. 23, when they travel to face Kentucky at 1 p.m.
