WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 defeat at No. 50 Minnesota in its Big Ten opener on Saturday. The 46th-ranked Boilermakers are now 4-2 overall.
The match got off to a good start for the visitors, as Purdue won two matches to claim the doubles point. Senior Missy Wright and junior Gretchen Haynor combined for a 9-8 win at No. 1, while sophomore Lara Burgarello and freshman Brittany Reitz teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
The Boilermakers needed to win three out of six singles matches to come away with the team victory. Unfortunately, they could muster only two. Sophomore Shawna Zuccarini delivered a three-set win over Michaela Havelkova at No. 3, while classmate Amy Walgenbach posted a 6-2, 6-2 win against Brandi Watts at No. 6.
With her victory in the third slot, Zuccarini remained perfect on the season with a 6-0 record. Walgenbach is now 5-1.
Minnesota moved to 4-1 overall with the victory.
Purdue will stay on the road for a match at Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 16. The match with the Hawkeyes will begin at 10 a.m.
