WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team concluded the day with a 2-0 record after sweeping Miami of Ohio this afternoon, and Butler this evening.

Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the team's ability to reach its goals for the weekend.

"This is a good way to start the year," Iandolo said. "We were able to look at people in different positions to see how well they adjust. These wins show the kind of depth we have, which will get stronger over the course of the season."

Purdue began the Butler match by winning the doubles point. Sophomore Lara Burgarello and freshman Brittany Reitz defeated Butler's Tayo Bailey and Laurel Clemments 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. New to the mix was sophomore Catie McLevish, who paired with junior Melissa Woods to upend the Bulldog's tandem of Lisa Valle and Annie Gantz 8-0. The Boilermakers also won the No. 1 position, with senior Missy Wright and junior Gretchen Haynor picking up a 9-7 victory.

In singles, Reitz turned in the first point for Purdue. She defeated Gantz 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. In fourth position, sophomore Amy Walgenbach won the third point after defeating Clemments 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Shawna Zuccarini clinched the match by defeating Bailey 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Haynor, Wright and Woods went on to win the No. 1, 3, and 5 spots, all in straight sets.
