SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Jess Hansen's 3-point basket from the top of the key with 31 seconds remaining in overtime boosted UC Santa Barbara to an 83-82 victory Tuesday night over sixth-ranked Purdue.
Purdue had a chance to tie the game with a half-second remaining when Emily Heikes was fouled after an offensive rebound. Heikes made her first free throw but missed the second, and UCSB's Brandy Richardson grabbed the rebound as time ran out.
Purdue (7-1), the two-time defending Big Ten champion, had won 38 consecutive games against unranked non-conference opponents. The Gauchos (4-1) had been ranked No. 25 in the preseason poll but dropped after a road loss to Michigan.
Lindsay Taylor led UCSB with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Hansen had 21 points, including six 3-pointers in 10 attempts. Shereka Wright had 26 points for Purdue. Beth Jones added 18 points, including a 3 that put the Boilermakers up 81-80 with 50 seconds left in overtime.
The Boilermakers had scored six points in the final nine seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime.
The run started with UCSB leading 72-67 when Jones was fouled behind the arc and made three free throws.
Lisa Willett made one of two foul shots to put UCSB ahead 73-70, but Purdue's Lindsey Hicks banked in a three-pointer with four-tenths of a second remaining to tie the score.
Purdue center Mary Jo Noon, the team's only senior, fouled out with 2:47 remaining in the game, and the 6-foot-8 Taylor made two free throws to give UCSB a 68-61 lead.
Taylor hit 10 of 11 free throws, and the Gauchos were 25-for-32 from the line, while Purdue made 16-of-24.
