West Lafayette, Ind. - It's been a day of wins and losses for the Purdue men's tennis team, as they closed out its first day of the 2002 Big Ten Singles Championship at the University of Minnesota.
Originally, eight Boilermakers entered the tournament hoping to stay alive in the runnings, however, junior Troy Havens and senior Andrew Wakefield led the way for the Boilermakers as they came out undefeated and made advances in both the main and consolation draws.
Thankfully, the junior made a big impression in the bottom half of the 64-player main draw. After three losses in the top half of the main draw and two more in the bottom half, Wakefield showed his senior leadership skills in his match against Wisconsin's Scott Green. Wakefield defeated the Badger 6-4, 6-4, which in turn, advanced the Boilermaker to face Minnesota's Steve Solberg in the 32-player-round draw.
At this point, Wakefield was like butter, he was on a roll. The Boilermaker faced Solberg and finished strong with this second victory against the Golden Gopher with a 6-3,6-1 Purdue win.
Coach Tim Madden was excited for Wakefield's performance and hopes the Boilermaker will continue his strong performance when he plays in the round of 16 on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
"Andrew again, shows his stellar performance and hopfully will continue to demonstrate that." Madden says.
Other Purdue victories took place in the consolation round. Junior Troy Havens was the other Boilermaker that celebrated a successful day in Minnesota. In the first consolation round, Havens defeated Wisconsin's Blake Baratz 6-3, 6-4 before defeating Northwestern's Tommy Hanus in a forfeit match. Hanus forfeited the match due to an injury status during play.
Like Wakefield, Havens advances to the third round of play tomorrow at Minnesota. The Round of 16 draw will begin at 10:30 a.m. with play in the top half and 11:00 a.m. in the bottom half.
