Women's Tennis Advances To Finals At Eck Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team competed at the Eck Classic in South Bend, Ind., today.

In doubles, sophomore Lara Burgarello and senior Missy Wright defeated Notre Dame's pair of Lauren Connelly and Alicia Salas 9-7, then went on to upend Liz Donohue and Kelly Nelson of Notre Dame 8-4. The Boilermakers will compete for the doubles champion title on Sunday, Nov. 10.

In the consolation of doubles, sophomores Amy Walgenbach and Shawna Zuccarini defeated Kristine Holte and Trine Juliussen of Syracuse. In the quarterfinals, Purdue's team upended Syracuse's duo of Masha Kabanova and Shervin Saedinia. Walgenbach and Zuccarini will advance to the consolation finals of doubles.

In the Blue Flight of singles, Walgenbach defeated Masha Kabanova of Syracuse 6-3, 6-2, while teammate Zuccarini toppled Melisa San Martin of Louisville 6-1, 6-1.

Wright bounced back from Friday's competition by defeating Karie Schlukebir of Indiana 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(7).

Burgarello fell 6-1, 6-2 to Katie Cunha of Notre Dame.

In the Green Flight of singles, sophomore Catie McLevish defeated Jami Kirk of Notre Dame 6-4, 6-2.

The Eck Classic will finish play on Sunday, Nov. 10 with the final rounds of singles and doubles. Full results for the tournament can be found at www.und.com.
