WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Seniors Melissa Iqbal and Missy Wright, and junior Gretchen Haynor competed in the Riviera Women's All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif., this afternoon.
Iqbal competed in the qualifying rounds of singles, while the 33rd-ranked Haynor and Wright participated in the qualifying round of doubles.
In 2001, Purdue was represented by Iqbal and Haynor in prequalifying singles and doubles. They both compiled a 2-2 record for singles and 0-1 for doubles.
In the first round, Iqbal, ranked 71st in the preseason ITA poll, defeated 87th-ranked Katie Blaszak of Duke 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. In the second round, Iqbal fell 6-2, 6-2 to Katie Granson, also of Duke.
Purdue's tandem of Haynor and Wright lost to Jessica Johnson and Alice Sukner of Marshall 8-4. The Boilermaker duo will compete against Feniel Esseghir and Lauren Fisher of UCLA at 3:30 EST in the first round of consolation.
