WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team saved its best for last, winning eight of nine matches against Stetson on the final day of competition at the USF Fall Classic in Tampa, Fla. The Boilermakers had won 11 matches the previous two days.
Junior Troy Havens was a double winner for the second day in a row. He teamed with senior Scott Mayer to beat Thomas Bross and Jason Cordova 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Playing at No. 1 singles, Havens beat Vittorio Fratta 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Andrew Wakefield won twice, as did freshmen Paul Rose and Colin Foster.
Wakefield and Rose paired for an 8-1 doubles win over Aleksandar Antonijevic and Fratta at No. 2. Wakefield then beat Christian Moe 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Rose picked up his second victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Cordova at No. 5.
Foster and senior Carl McCafferty beat Moe and Reid Stubbs 8-1 at No. 3. Foster then beat Stubbs at No. 6 singles by a 6-0, 6-4 count.
Also winning for Purdue was junior Seth McKinley, who held on to defeat Antonijevic 7-4, 4-6 (10-5) at No. 3.
Purdue will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when it hosts the 2002 Boilermaker Invitational. The two-day tournament will feature Ball State, Indiana State, Evansville, Iowa, Toledo and Western Michigan.
