Men's Tennis Finishes First Day At USF Fall Classic

Oct. 4, 2002

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team finished its first round of competition at the USF Fall Classic in Tampa, Fla., today, Oct. 4.

The Boilermakers began the day with doubles against the host Bulls. Senior Scott Mayer and freshman Paul Rose beat Uli Kiendl and Nadim Naser 8-3 at No. 2, while senior Carl McCafferty and junior Seth McKinley beat Jorge Escallon and Juan Barragan 8-4 at No. 3.

In morning singles against South Florida, Mayer won at No. 1, beating 54th-ranked Paco Antelo 6-4, 1-6 (11-9). Mayer currently is ranked 72nd. Junior Troy Havens beat Barragan 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3.

In afternoon singles, sophomore David Robinson picked up a 6-2, 6-7 (10-5) win over Federico Barton at No. 7.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden thought the heat may have been a factor in his team's play.

"The heat index was around 100, and we're not used to training in that," Madden said. "And South Florida is a very good team - probably one of the best we've seen in awhile. We're glad we got the challenge and are looking to move forward."

Purdue will continue tomorrow when it meets UCF at 9 a.m. The Boilermakers will play Stetson on Sunday, Oct. 6.
