Boilermakers In Finals Of Doubles At Tennessee Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team came away with five doubles wins and three singles victories at the St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., today.

Head coach Mat Iandolo said he was pleased with today's doubles results.

"We bounced back after the singles competition to knock off some ranked teams," Iandolo said.

In Flight One of doubles, junior Gretchen Haynor and senior Missy Wright lost to Tennessee's tandem of Tammy Encina and Sabita Maharaj 8-2, but regained composure to upset Maryland's No. 25 duo of Emily Marker and Delila Causevic 9-8. Haynor and Wright will battle for first place on Saturday.

In Flight Two, senior Melissa Iqbal and junior Melissa Woods defeated Mississippi State's combo of Marcelle Hirt and Magdolna Rekasi 8-1. The Boilermaker duo then went on to defeat North Carolina State's tandem of Jennifer Jassawalla and Danielle Staddelmann 8-3. Iqbal and Woods also will contend for first place on Saturday.

Sophomore Lara Bargarello and freshman Brittany Reitz lost 9-8 to Georgia Tech's team of Mysti Morris and Annelies Schenk in Flight Two. After bouncing back and defeating Maryland's duo of Jennifer Dent and Chloe Chavardes 8-6, Burgarello and Reitz will have a chance to place fifth.

In singles, Burgarello, Haynor and sophomore Shawna Zuccarini all won in straight sets.

In the second flight of singles, Haynor defeated Sekita Grant of Georgia Tech 6-1, 6-4. In Flight Four, Burgarello upended Ashley Robards of Tennessee 6-3, 6-3. Zuccarini toppled Erin Cohn of Tennessee 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth flight.

In other singles action, Iqbal was defeated by Encina of Tennessee 6-1, 6-4 in Flight One, while Reitz lost 6-7, 6-1, 7-5 to Kendall Cline of North Carolina in the third flight. Walgenbach dropped a 6-2, 7-6 decision to Kendrick Bunn of North Carolina in Flight Four, while Wright fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 to Dent of Maryland in the fifth flight.

Play will resume tomorrow, Oct. 5. The doubles teams of Haynor and Wright, and Iqbal and Woods both will have final matches beginning tomorrow afternoon. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 6. Full results for the St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic can be found at www.utladyvols.com.
