Mayer And Havens Bow Out Of Regionals

Oct. 28, 2002

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Scott Mayer and Troy Havens dropped their quarterfinal doubles match at the Omni Hotels/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Madison, Wis., on Monday.

Mayer and Havens lost 8-6 to 21st-ranked Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim of Louisville. The Boilermaker senior and junior had won three straight matches at the tournament before bowing out.

Mayer and Havens were the last Purdue representatives in the event. Both played singles, along with senior Andrew Wakefield, but did not advance past the third round.

Despite not having any of the three make the final 16 of the singles draw, Purdue head coach Tim Madden was happy with his players' effort.

"We did a good job this weekend, but we just couldn't come through," Madden said. "I'm not at all disappointed with how we competed."

Madden gave the most praise to Havens, who has made strides in doubles after not competing with a partner last season.

"Troy has improved immensely as a doubles player over the last few weeks," Madden said. "He's playing with a lot of confidence. His progress is probably the brightest and most encouraging thing we've seen develop this fall."

Havens and the rest of the Boilermakers will close out their fall campaign at the Big Ten Singles Championships, which will be held Nov. 16 to 18, in Minneapolis, Minn.

The lone Purdue player who will not compete at the season finale is Mayer, who is suffering from radial tunnel syndrome. Mayer will undergo surgery and is expected to make a full recovery in time for the spring season.
