Mayer And Havens Advance To Regional Quarterfinals

Oct. 27, 2002

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Scott Mayer and Troy Havens advanced to the quarterfinals of the Omni Hotels/ITA Midwest Regional Championships with two wins on Sunday, Oct. 27, in Madison, Wis.

The senior and junior doubles pair beat Western Michigan's Dan Grupp and Jose Orozco 8-5 in its third-round match, then knocked off Notre Dame's Luis Haddock and Nick Lopez-Acevedo 8-3 in the fourth.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden was pleased with their performance.

"Troy and Scott are starting to put things together and complement each other better," Madden said. "Today, Troy's serve was overpowering, and Scott was able to do a lot of things at net."

Mayer now will be able to concentrate solely on doubles, as he bowed out of the singles draw with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to 52nd-ranked Michael Calkins of Illinois.

Mayer and Havens will face 21st-ranked Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim of Louisville in the quarterfinals on Monday, Oct. 28. Semifinals also will be played Monday, with the championship match scheduled for Tuesday. The regional champion is awarded an automatic berth into the 2003 ITA National Indoor Championships to be played in February.
