WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team competed in the main draw of singles and doubles at the ITA/Omni Hotels Regional Championships in East Lansing, Mich., today.
The Boilermaker's No. 4 seed and 71st-ranked senior Melissa Iqbal defeated Keri Thompson of Michigan State 6-3, 6-3 and went on to tople Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame 6-0, 6-1. She will advance to the quarterfinal competition on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 9 a.m.
Sophomore Lara Burgarello toppled Melanie Peters of Western Michigan 6-1, 6-3, but lost her composure to No. 2 seed, 40th-ranked Jennifer McGaffigan of Illinois in the next round.
Freshman Brittany Reitz defeated Eva Choe of Illinois 6-0, 6-4. In the second round of doubles, Reitz fell 6-3, 7-5 to No. 7 seed and 52nd-ranked Jessica Rush of Northwestern.
Junior Gretchen Haynor fell to Eldina Fazlic of Illinois 7-5, 6-4, while sophomore Shawna Zuccarini was defeated by Tiffany Eklov of Illinois 6-4, 6-3.
In the main draw of doubles, Reitz and Burgarello defeated Cristelle Grier and Andrea Yung of Northwestern 8-6. The Boilermakers will compete in the final two rounds of doubles on Monday, Oct. 28.
Purdue's No. 6 seed and 33rd-ranked doubles team of junior Gretchen Haynor and senior Missy Wright fell 9-7 to Frederika Girsang and Melanie Peters of Western Michigan.
