Boilermakers Advance To Quarterfinals Of Regional Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman Brittany Reitz and sophomore Shawna Zuccarini advance to the quarterfinals of qualifying singles at the Omni Hotels/ITA Regional Championships in East Lansing, today.

The Purdue women's tennis team has a 6-2 record for the tournament so far.

Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo said he was very pleased with the team's confidence and effort.

"We had a good day overall," Iandolo said. "We made a good statement today and hope to continue it through tomorrow."

Reitz and Zuccarini are on a two match winning streak and will play Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m.

Reitz defeated Viviano Rivero of Toledo 6-2, 6-1 and then toppled Alyssa Halcomb of Western Michigan 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 seed Zuccarini upended Dominika Walterova of Indiana 6-1, 6-2. Zuccarini went on to defeat Jenny Batty of Ball State 6-3, 6-0.

"We are looking to Brittany and Shawna for continued success allowing them to qualify for the main draw of singles," Iandolo said.

Senior Missy Wright defeated Lexi Goldin of Wisconsin 6-1, 6-2, but fell 6-2, 6-2 to Jamie Peisel of Northwestern.

No. 1 seed sophomore Amy Walgenbach defeated Jill Wieman of Ball State 6-3, 6-2, but lost composure to Shelley Brady of Michigan State 6-2, 6-3.

The quarterfinals and semifinals of qualifying singles will be played Friday, Oct. 25 in the morning and the main draw of doubles will begin at 2 p.m. Full results for the Omni Hotels/ITA Regional Championships can be found at www.msuspartans.com.
