WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women's tennis player, senior Missy Wright led a strong showing for the Boilermakers by advancing to the final round of singles in the June Stewart Fall Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., today.
Wright went on a two-match winning streak in the fifth flight. In the first round, Wright defeated Anna Dolinska of Clemson 7-5, 7-5 and went on to defeat Breanna Kray of Tennessee 6-3, 6-3. Wright will finish play on Oct. 19.
In Flight Four, freshman Lara Burgarello defeated Kori Scott of Vanderbilt 7-5, 6-2. In the semifinals, Burgarello fell to Ana Stiglic of Clemson 6-3, 7-5 and will be competing for a third place finish on Saturday.
Three Boilermakers will advance to the consolation finals on Saturday, Oct. 19. Freshman Brittany Reitz, sophomore teammates Amy Walgenbach and Shawna Zuccarini all will be hoping for a fifth place finish.
Reitz fell 6-0, 6-3 to Sabita Maharaj of Tennessee, but regained her composure to upset Vanderbilt's 55th-ranked Kelly Schmandt 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in Flight Two. In the third flight, Walgenbach lost to Audra Falk of Vanderbilt 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, but will advance due to a default by Stacy Varnell of Middle Tennessee, while Zuccarini fell 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 to Richele LeSaldo of Clemson, but bounced back to topple Maria Neito of Georgia Tech 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the sixth flight.
In Flight One, junior Gretchen Haynor fell to Vanderbilt's 10th-ranked Sarah Riske 6-2, 6-4 and went on to be defeated by Marshall's 82nd-ranked Jessica Johnson 6-1, 6-3. She will compete for a seventh place finish.
Sophomore Catie McLevish fell to Sunnie Harmon of Clemson 6-4, 6-4 in the round robin, Flight Seven.
The doubles competition was not played due to rain. Saturday, Oct. 19, the Boilermakers will complete their singles play and open doubles with two rounds. The final round will be played on Sunday, Oct. 20. Full results for the June Stewart Fall Invitational can be found at www.vucommodores.com.
