WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis sophomore David Robinson and freshman Colin Foster both reached the finals of their respective flights in the 2002 Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday at the Varsity Courts.
Foster was the first to reach the title match in one of the two B flights. He defeated Butler's Aubrey Annan 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, then knocked off Iowa's Chaitu Malempati 6-4, 7-6 in the second.
Foster said he started off on the right foot, then outworked his adversaries.
"I got off to a good start today and played pretty well," Foster said. "I didn't play as offensively as I would have liked, but I out-competed my opponents. I'm looking forward to playing in the finals."
Foster will meet Western Michigan's Jose Orozco in his last match of the weekend.
Robinson was the last entry into the finals, finishing his match just before 8 p.m., 11 hours after the tournament began. Playing in the second B flight, Robinson rallied to beat Iowa's Parker Ross 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the first round, then defeated Western Michigan's Dan Grupp 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Robinson will face Bronco Mike Findling in the championship.
Purdue coach Tim Madden was pleased with the finish of both Foster and Rose, but had hoped for a better overall performance.
"Today was a little frustrating," Madden said. "We're used to dominating our own tournament, but we didn't do that. Colin and David found ways to win, and I'm proud of them for that. As a whole, though, we've got a lot of making up to do."
The morning began well for senior Carl McCafferty, who beat Butler's Mike Weaver in an A flight first round 7-6, 6-1. But McCafferty fell in the second to Western Michigan's Justin Kates, 6-3, 7-6.
In the same A flight, senior Andrew Wakefield lost 6-3, 7-6 to Bronco Tom Dennis in the first round, then regrouped to beat Iowa's Johan Bergenas 6-2, 7-5.
Junior Troy Havens won his first-round match in the second A flight, beating Iowa's Tres Jones 7-5, 6-4 before falling 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 to Toledo's Dipesh Rao.
Freshman Paul Rose just missed a chance at meeting Foster in the finals. He beat Butler's Scott Newmark 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the first B flight, then dropped a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 decision to Orozco in the second.
Sophomore Sounak Chatterjee was a first-round winner in Robinson's flight, beating Iowa's David Freijd 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. He then fell 7-6, 7-6 to Findling.
Junior Seth McKinley lost his opener to Hawkeye Hunter Skogman 6-0, 6-2 in the second A flight, then lost 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Indiana State's Lovre Brajkovic in his back-draw match.
Rain forced play indoors to the Lafayette Sports Center and caused a considerable delay. It also preempted doubles play, forcing a change in format for Sunday. Play on the final day will begin with singles at 9 a.m., followed by as many doubles rounds as time permits. The tournament is set up for three rounds of doubles.
