Men's Tennis Successful In First Day At Tom Fallon Invitational

Sept. 20, 2002

Four Purdue men's tennis players went undefeated in the first day of play at the 16th annual Tom Fallon Invitational today, Sept. 21.

Seniors Scott Mayer, Andrew Wakefield, junior Troy Havens and freshman Paul Rose won three doubles matches each, helping the Boilermakers win seven of 12 matches in the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind.

Havens and Wakefield teamed up to win the first match in the first round against William & Mary's Sean Kelleher and Geoffry Russell 8-5. Mayer and Rose followed with their 8-5 victory against Jeffery Kader and Stephen Ward.

Against Indiana State, Mayer and Rose defeated Henry Choi and Dalibor Mihajlovic 9-8 (7-3). Purdue's Havens and Wakefield carried their solid doubles play in the second round and defeated the Sycamores' Lovre Brajkovic and David O'Connell 8-5.

Despite the inclement weather, which compelled teams to play indoors, Purdue coach Tim Madden was pleased with what he saw today.

"It's been raining and we've played doubles indoors all day," Madden said. "There was a lot of good team chemistry going on with our doubles team today."

Facing host Notre Dame, the Boilermakers culminated the round winning two of three matches. Mayer and Rose led the way with a 9-7 victory against Luis Haddock and Matthew Rubin, while Purdue senior Carl McCafferty and freshman Colin Foster beat Ben Hatten and Nicolas Lopez 9-8 (7-4).

The Boilermakers finished the day off with one last win against Michigan. Havens and Wakefield defeated Anthony Jackson and Chris Shaya 8-3.

The Boilermakers continue the tournament with singles matches on Saturday, September 21, when they take on the Fighting Irish at 9 a.m., and Harvard at 1 p.m.
