Boilermakers Post 6-2 Victory Over Evansville In Home Finale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue posted a 6-2 victory over Evansville in its final home game of the 2002 season.

The Boilermakers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Kris Luce singled home Daniel Underwood for a 1-0 lead.

Purdue struck for four runs in the second inning when Underwood blasted a grand slam over the left field fence to extend the lead to 5-0. It was the second Boilermaker grand slam of the season.

Andy Rempel scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning as Purdue took a 6-0 lead.

Sean O'Neil cruised to his third victory of the season. The right-hander scattered five hits over six shutout innings, striking out five Purple Aces along the way.

Evansville scored single runs in the seventh and ninth innings for the game's final 6-2 margin.

Kris Luce had three hits and one RBI in his final home game.

Senior Michael Correll registered his first hit of the season in his final at-bat at Lambert Field. Senior left-hander Heath Uppencamp earned the second save of his career, tossing the final three innings in relief.

Purdue improves its overall record to 23-29. The Boilermakers are 12-16 in Big Ten play and travel to Michigan this weekend for the final series of the conference season.

-Five seniors played their final home game at Lambert Field: Michael Correll, John Gusich, David Harrell, Kris Luce and Heath Uppencamp.
-Matt Bush collected both his first career hit, a single, and first career extra-base hit, a double, in the game.
-Sean O'Neil upped his career record to 11-4 and his .733 winning percentage rank as the third-best in Purdue history.
-Heath Uppencamp's save was his first since April 21, 1999, his freshman season, vs. Illinois State.
