Baseball Drops 10-7 Decision In Series Finale At Illinois

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue fell 10-7 in Sunday's series finale at Illinois, splitting the four-game series in Champaign. The Boilermakers dropped to 5-3 in Big Ten play and 12-15 overall.

The Fighting Illini opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Patrick Arlis' single scored Andy Schutzenhofer and Drew Davidson, taking a 2-0 lead.

Illinois' Brandon Cashman hit a solo home run in second inning to extend the home lead to 3-0. Purdue starter Sean O'Neil was lifted and replaced by Brent Coudron during the inning.

The Boilermakers drew even in the top of the third inning. Nick McIntyre delivered a single that scored Brad Kriner and Adam Fazio and trimmed the margin to 3-2. Andy Rempel then scored on a wild pitch/passed ball by Illini hurler Reilly Smith, knotting the score at three.

Arlis added a sacrifice fly in the third inning that scored Davidson and gave Illinois a 4-3 lead.

Daniel Underwood led off the top of the fourth with a double, chasing Smith, who was replaced by Justin Olson. Brad Kriner drove home Underwood from third on a single down the right field line to even the game at four.

Illinois regained the lead, 6-4, in the fifth inning when Arlis' doubled home two runs. The Illini went on to score five runs in the frame. Dusty Bensko then followed with a RBI single scoring Luke Simmons and Joe Parenti brought home Arlis on a RBI groundout for an 8-4 advantage. Brian Raymond singled to score Bensko and Illinois led 9-4.

Purdue delivered a two-out rally in the sixth, drawing within 9-5 when Kris Luce blasted his second home run of the season, a solo shot, over the left field fence. John Gusich followed with a double and was replaced with pinch-runner Wilson James, who scored on a Kriner single to cut the lead to 9-6. Mitch Koester followed by lacing a double to left center plating Kriner and bringing the Boilermakers within two at 9-7.

Schutzenhofer extended Illinois' lead back to 10-7 with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth, providing the game's final margin.

Heath Uppencamp tossed 2.2 innings of hitless relief out of the bullpen to finish the game for Purdue.

Offensively, Rempel and McIntyre each collected a pair of hits in the contest. McIntyre and Kriner led Purdue with two RBI each.

The Boilermakers return home for a five-game home stand and play nine of their next 10 games at Lambert Field. Purdue hosts Valparaiso at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before opening its Big Ten home schedule against Northwestern on Friday.

-Adam Fazio extended his hit streak to 13 games, dating to March 17 at Coastal Carolina. It is the longest hit streak by a Purdue player during the 2002 season. Daniel Underwood's 21-game streak spanned two seasons (2001 and 2002), including nine games this year.
-Brad Kriner's three hits were his most this season. His career high is four set twice, last at Indiana State on May 5, 2001.
-Heath Uppencamp matched his career high with 2.2 innings of relief work. He previously set the mark on March 7, 1999 at Louisville as a freshman.
