WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue scored nine unanswered runs for a 10-7 victory in game two of its series at Ohio State. The game began on Saturday before being suspended midway through the third inning because of rain.
The Buckeyes jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Doug Dendinger singled home Doug Deeds for a 1-0 lead off Boilermaker starter Mitch Pruemer.
Purdue answered in the bottom of the third, knotting the score at one, when Nick McIntyre laced a double down the left field line to score Mitch Koester.
After playing through light rain, heavier precipitation began to fall and the game was stopped at 5:01 p.m. on Saturday and delayed for nearly three hours before a decision was made to suspend the contest and resume play on Sunday.
Eighteen hours after the game was initially halted, the two teams resumed action with Ohio State batting in the bottom of the third. Both Pruemer and Buckeye pitcher E.J. Laratta returned to the mound when play continued.
Ohio State wasted no time in the third inning as Brett Garrard singled and was followed by consecutive home runs to left field by Deeds and Nick Swisher for a 4-1 OSU lead. Later in the inning, Lance Rolston doubled home Joe Wilkins, and eventually came around to score on Mike Rabin's RBI single, capping a five-run Buckeye inning as the home team took a 6-1 lead.
Purdue led off the fourth inning with three consecutive hits by John Gusich, Brad Kriner and Wilson James. Gusich scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Koester and Kriner scored on Adam Fazio's RBI single to left field to make it 6-3. McIntyre then delivered a RBI single to left, plating Koester and cutting the Ohio State lead to two. In the next at-bat, David Harrell blasted a grand slam to right-center field, giving the Boilermakers an 8-6 advantage.
Simon Klink delivered a pinch-hit double off the right-center field wall, scoring Kris Luce and Brad Kriner as Purdue extended its lead to 10-6 in the top of the seventh inning.
The Buckeyes cut the lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the seventh when Dendinger scored on Drew Anderson's RBI groundout, providing the game's final margin.
Ohio native Brian Karpel replaced Pruemer and tossed 4.1 innings to earn his third victory of the season. He has won his last three decisions including two victories in his home state at Xavier and Ohio State.
Fazio, Harrell, Koester and Kriner each belted out two hits for Purdue.
The Boilermakers, 21-19 overall and 11-7 in the Big Ten, are scheduled to play an additional pair of full seven-inning contests against Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium.
