WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After winning the first two games of its series at Ohio State, Purdue dropped game three to the Buckeyes, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Brett Garrard's double scored Christian Snavely. Garrard later scored on a Doug Dendinger sacrifice fly for an early 2-0 Ohio State lead off Purdue starter Brent Coudron.
Ohio State extended its lead to 6-0 with a pair of two-run home runs in the fifth inning. Doug Deeds hit his 10th home run of the season over the right field fence before Dendinger added his fourth of the season over right-center field.
The Buckeyes added a pair of runs in the sixth when Deeds' sacrifice fly scored Lance Rolston and Nick Swisher's RBI single plated Mike Rabin, for an 8-0 OSU lead.
Left-hander Josh Newman limited Purdue to six hits in a seven-inning complete game shutout, earning his team-leading seventh win of the season.
Adam Fazio and John Gusich both had two hits for Purdue.
The Boilermakers, 21-20 overall and 11-8 in the Big Ten, are scheduled to conclude their four-game series with Ohio State in a seven-inning contest this afternoon.
