WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue defeated Xavier, 2-1, behind solid pitching and Simon Klink's go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning. Three Boilermaker pitchers combined to hold the Musketeers to one run on just four hits.
Xavier opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Mark Andres drove home leadoff hitter Eric Greenwell with a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead.
Brad Kriner extended his hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single, plating Michael Correll to knot the score at one in the top of the seventh off Musketeer reliever Jay Johnson. Correll entered the game as a pinch-runner for Kris Luce who doubled earlier in the frame.
Purdue took the 2-1 lead when Klink delivered a two-out RBI single in the eighth to score Nick McIntyre, who walked earlier in the inning.
Sean O'Neil posted a solid performance in his start, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing just one Xavier run on four hits, before Brian Karpel came out of the bullpen for the Boilermakers in the seventh inning to toss 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his second victory of the season.
Dustin Glant entered the game and retired the final two outs to earn his third save.
Jarrett Sues started for the Musketeers before giving way to Kevin Crowley, as the duo combined to hold Purdue scoreless through the first six innings.
The Boilermakers, 19-19 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten, continue their five-game road trip through the Buckeye State with a four-game weekend series at Ohio State. Friday night's game in Columbus will be televised live at 6:30 p.m. (ET) by the Ohio News Network.
