WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue dropped its series finale to Iowa, 3-2, on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Lambert Field. The Hawkeyes took the final three games of the weekend set.
Iowa opened the scoring in the top of the first when Brad Carlson doubled home Andy Jansen for an early 1-0 lead against Boilermaker starter Mitch Pruemer.
The Hawkeyes took a 2-0 advantage in the sixth inning when Kyle Thousand singled home Jansen.
Purdue answered in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the margin to 2-1 on Daniel Underwood RBI single, plating Nick McIntyre.
The Boilermakers knotted the score at two in the bottom of the eighth inning when Kris Luce singled home David Harrell.
Iowa responded by scoring the decisive run in the top of the ninth when Chris Groth doubled, scoring Jeff Gremley for a 3-2 lead, the game's final margin.
Pruemer scattered six hits, allowing just one run with four strikeouts in his five innings of work. Herman took the loss, despite four solid innings out of the bullpen, allowing just a pair of hits and one run.
Underwood posted two of Purdue's seven hits on the afternoon. Harrell and Simon Klink each had a double in the contest.
The Boilermakers fall to 18-19 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten. Purdue heads to Cincinnati on Wednesday for a non-conference match-up at Xavier before returning to conference play next weekend at Ohio State.
