WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Iowa Saturday afternoon at Lambert Field.

In game one, the Hawkeyes used twelve hits and three home runs, including two by Brad Carlson, for a 9-3 victory.

Iowa scored first with a RBI single by Andy Cox to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Purdue answered in the bottom of the frame when Adam Fazio singled home Brad Kriner to even the score at one.

The Boilermakers took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning when David Harrell cleared the fence with a two-run homer, his fourth round-tripper of the season.

The Hawkeyes answered with five runs in the fifth inning, including home runs by Chris Groth and Carlson's two-run shot, for a 6-3 advantage. Iowa added three more runs in the seventh, including Carlson's solo home run, taking a 8-3 lead, the game's final margin.

In game two, Iowa's Cory Hollenhorst limited Purdue to six hits in a complete game shutout.

The Hawkeyes scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Iowa opened the scoring when Andy Jansen doublhed home Ian Mattiace for a 1-0 fourth-inning lead. The visitors added two more runs led by John Paul Cappellano's solo home run in the seventh for the 3-0 win.

Scott Byrnes took the loss despite a solid performance. In his first career Big Ten start, the freshman tossed 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs while striking out four without a walk.

The Boilermakers, 18-18 overall, 9-6 in the Big Ten, return to action with Sunday's series finale vs. Iowa. The game begins at 1 p.m and will be aired live on WAZY-AM (1410) and on www.purduesports.com

Additional Game Notes

-Purdue dropped both games of a Big Ten doubleheader for the first time since April 8, 2000 at Iowa. -David Harrell's game one home run marked the first time he has posted a round-tripper in consecutive games during his Purdue career. -Scott Byrnes made his first Big Ten start in game two. -The game two loss was only the second time this season that the Boilermakers have been shutout (March 29 at Penn State, 1-0).
