WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Playing its last road match of the regular season, the Purdue men's tennis team did not meet with success in a 6-1 loss at No. 19 Ohio State on Sunday, April 14. The Boilermakers drop their overall record to 9-10 and even their Big Ten mark to 4-4, while the Buckeyes improve to 19-2 and 8-0.
The Boilermakers were unable to find their niche early on in doubles and lost at the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots. That gave Buckeyes the upper hand with a 1-0 team lead heading into singles.
It did not get any easier for Purdue in the individual matches, and the Boilermakers lost at No. 1, 2 and 3 before junior Andrew Wakefield turned the tables and defeated Ohio State's Conor Casey 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 4. That was to be Purdue's only point of the afternoon, as the Boilermakers also lost at No. 5 and 6.
Coach Tim Madden would liked to have seen better play dictation in both doubles and singles action in the today's loss in Columbus and a Saturday loss at Penn State.
"I believe we lost six tie-breakers this weekend, which tells me we're not competing with match toughness," Madden said.
With the last home matches of the regular season on April 20 and 21, Madden believes wins against Michigan State and Michigan are critical for seeding at the Big Ten tournament and a berth into the NCAA Championships.
"We must do well against Michigan State and Michigan," Madden said. "If we're not motivated for this weekend - the last weekend at home - there's something wrong. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of energy this week in our training, and hopefully we'll come through."
