WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Nick McIntyre singled home Adam Fazio in the bottom of the ninth to give Purdue a 7-6 victory over visiting Valparaiso in a seesaw battle at Lambert Field.
Valparaiso opened the scoring in the top of the second when Mike Jaroscak scored from third on a Kris Luce error.
The Boilermakers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, knotting the score at one when Brad Kriner singled home David Harrell. Wilson James added a RBI groundout, scoring Luce, to give the Boilermakers a 2-1 lead.
The Crusaders evened the score at two in the top of third on Mark Pederson's RBI groundout. Valparaiso took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Brad Tokarz singled home Dan Schrum.
Valpo extended its lead to 4-2 in the sixth when Jaroscak scored on Tokarz' sacrifice fly.
Purdue drew within 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Harrell sacrifice fly plated Daniel Underwood.
The Crusaders and Boilermakers exchanged runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Valpo scored one run in the seventh and the eighth on RBI singles by Jaroscak and Pedersen while Purdue tallied one run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Wilson James scored when Fazio reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 5-4 in the seventh. In the eighth, Kriner drove in two runs, scoring Gusich and Harrell to knot the score at five entering the ninth.
Fazio led off the Purdue ninth with a single and later stole second. McIntyre then dropped a single to center field for the game-winning hit, scoring Fazio and giving the Boilermakers a 7-6 victory.
Kriner led Purdue with three hits and three RBI while Underwood also collected three hits. Matt Skripsky picked up the win, his first of the season.
The Boilermakers improved to 13-15 overall and return to action on Friday with the Big Ten home opener vs. Northwestern at 3 p.m. The game can be heard live on WAZY-AM (1410) and via the internet at www.purduesports.com.
