Baseball Drops Tough 5-4 Decision To George Washington

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue dropped a tough 5-4 decision to George Washington in the conclusion of the Clash of the in Lancaster, Calif.

The Boilermakers got on the board in the top of the first inning when Adam Fazio doubled home Daniel Underwood who led-off the game with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Underwood's base hit extended his hit streak to 19 games, dating to April 29, 2001. Kris Luce drove home Fazio with a single and later scored on John Gusich's double, giving Purdue a 3-0.

George Washington put one run on the board in the top of fourth, making the score 3-1, but Purdue countered in the bottom of the fifth when Gusich singled home David Harrell to regain the three-run margin at 4-1.

The Colonials cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth behind a pair of RBI doubles by Ryan Roberson and Anthony Raglani that chased starting pitcher Mitch Pruemer. Heath Uppencamp thwarted the GW threat retiring the final two batters of the inning and leaving two runners stranded.

Sean O'Neil entered the game in the seventh with one out and two GW baserunners. The right-hander struck out Jeff Fertitta before a wild pitch scored Roberson from third base, knotting the score at four.

Purdue threatened in the eighth when John Manuel reached base on a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Brad Kriner's bunt. Manuel was thrown out at the plate by pitcher Justin Orenduff on Mitch Koester's bunt. Koester stole second and Underwood walked before Fazio was enticed into a ground out force play.

George Washington took the lead in the top of ninth when Raglani singled home Mike Bassett with two outs.

In his second start as a Boilermaker, Pruemer tossed 5.1 innings while scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs.

The Boilermakers, 2-5, resume play on Friday with a 4 p.m. (ET) contest at No. 2 Clemson in the first game of an eight-game, ten-day spring break trip through South Carolina.
