Boilermakers Fall To Coastal Carolina 11-7

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Coastal Carolina defeated Purdue 11-7 in a seesaw affair Friday afternoon in Conway, S.C.

The Chanticleers scored first, posting two runs in the bottom of the first behind RBI singles from Adam Keim and Randy McGarvey.

Purdue came back to even the score at two in the top of the fourth after loading the bases. Kris Luce, who had reached base earlier in the inning with a walk, scored on Brad Kriner's RBI groundout. Mitch Koester followed with an RBI single of his own, scoring John Gusich. The Boilermakers took their first lead of the contest when Daniel Underwood doubled home Koester.

Coastal Carolina answered in the bottom half of the inning, tallying three runs, two of which scored on Ryan McGraw's double, to take a 4-3 lead. McGraw eventually scored on a groundout to make it a 5-3 lead for the homestanding Chanticleers.

John Gusich drew the Boilermakers to within one run at 5-4 with his first home run of the season, a fifth-inning solo shot over the left field wall.

The Chanticleers extended their lead to 7-4 in the sixth when Justin Owens singled home Steve Pinnochio and McGraw. Keim added a solo home run in the seventh inning off reliever Josh Herman to make it 8-4.

Koester doubled home Gusich in the eighth inning to make it an 8-5 game. Andy Rempel scored on Underwood's infield single to cut the margin to two. Underwood then swiped second and Koester scored from third on the throw to second as the double steal cut the Coastal lead to one at 8-7.

CCU answered the Purdue rally when Brandon Powell drove home two runs to give the Chants a 10-7 advantage. McGarvey then singled home Powell to make it 11-7.

Starter Chadd Blasko threw 6.0 innings allowing five earned runs and striking out four.

The Boilermakers, 2-11, resume play on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., with the second game of the three-game set against Coastal.

Additional Game Notes

-John Gusich's home run was his fourth as a Boilermaker and his first since 4/21/01 at Illinois. Gusich has five career homers, including one while at Arizona State.
-Gusich tied his career high with three runs scored, matching his previous standard set on 4/7/01 at Northwestern.
-Mitch Koester established a new career high with two RBI. He also tied his career highs with two hits (set twice previously, last at Wofford on 3/11/02) and two runs scored (set twice, last at Wofford on 3/11/02).
-Andy Rempel registered his first multi-hit game as a Boilermaker. His two hits were a career-best.
