WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Although the 50th-ranked Purdue men's tennis team lost 5-2 to the 29th-ranked Demon Deacons Thursday afternoon at the University of San Diego, coach Tim Madden was really proud of his team for showing team spirit.

"I give a lot of credit to them for staying in the fight," Madden says. "For staying positive and for supporting each other."

The Boilermakers captured two out of three doubles matches to win the team point and take a 1-0 lead, but Wake Forest reacted and took five of six singles matches to capture the team victory.

No. 22 junior Scott Mayer and senior Dan Swan won the No. 1 doubles match 9-8 (5) for the Boilermakers, but could not carry their doubles victory over into singles. No. 33 David Loewenthal defeated Mayer 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Wake Forest's David Bere stopped Derrick Miller 7-6 (4), 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot and Justin Kaufmann took out Troy Havens 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 6.

Senior Laith Al-Agba and junior Carl McCafferty culminated the doubles victory at No. 2. The duo defeated the Demon Decons' Mike Murray and Derrick Spice 8-5. McCafferty was the sole Boilermaker to win a singles match, defeating Murray 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4.

"I am really proud of our team for showing great team spirit today." Madden says. "And I think it is difficult when we compete hard, but don't quite get it done."

Purdue begins its Big Ten schedule against Iowa on Saturday, March 23 at the Lafayette Sports Center. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
