WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue fell to 2-2 on the young season, dropping an 11-10 decision to Cal State Northridge, Thursday night in Lancaster, Calif.
The Boilermakers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on David Harrell's two-run home run. Daniel Underwood scored after leading off the game with a walk and adding a steal of second base.
Cal State Northridge got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring on Mel Robinson's single bringing home Jason Allec. The Matadors took the lead, 3-2, when two runs scored on an Underwood error of a wind-plagued fly ball to right.
Purdue knotted the score at three when Harrell scored on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, John Manuel scored on Brad Kriner's RBI single to regain the lead at 4-3.
Northridge took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs in the frame to gain an 8-4 advantage.
The Boilermakers cut the lead to 8-5 when Kris Luce doubled and eventually scored on a Manuel single.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Matadors again answered, scoring three runs to extend their lead to 11-5.
Adam Fazio singled home Andy Rempel and Underwood in the eighth-inning, cutting the margin to 11-7.
Purdue rallied in their final at-bat in the top of ninth, loading the bases with two outs. Matador closer Phil Polanco walked in a run on Underwood's bases on balls to make it 11-8. Fazio followed up with a two-run single, scoring Manuel and Mitch Koester, and Purdue was within one run at 11-10 before Nick McIntyre popped out to the catcher to end the game.
Dustin Glant, pitched 4.0 innings in his second career start, scattering five hits and yielding one earned run.
The Boilermakers return to action on Friday night with a second game against Cal State Northridge in the opening game of the Clash of the Conferences. Chadd Blasko is scheduled to make his second start of the season after allowing just one earned run and striking out six in 7.2 innings of work, a performance that earned him the victory against Texas-San Antonio last Friday. Game time is 6:10 p.m. (PT) at The Hangar/Municipal Stadium in Lancaster.

-Daniel Underwood extended his hitting streak to 16 games (dating to 4/29/01 at Indiana).
-David Harrell belted a two-run home run in his second consecutive game. It marked the first time in his Purdue career he has homered in back-to-back games.
-Freshman Jesse Krause made his Purdue debut, pitching 0.1 innings in the game.
-Luke Howard and Heath Uppencamp made their 2002 debuts on the mound in tonight's contest.
