Baseball Falls To Texas San-Antonio 8-3

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-The No. 23 Boilermakers dropped a 8-3 decision to Texas-San Antonio, evening their record at 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Purdue opened the scoring in the second inning when Kris Luce scored on a throwing error by UTSA pitcher Trey Rice. The Boilermakers took a 2-0 lead in the following inning when David Harrell's sacrifice fly drove in Daniel Underwood. Underwood had reached base with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

The home-standing Roadrunners scored once in bottom half of the third inning and took the lead with a two-run fourth. Wilson James scored for Purdue on a fifth-inning wild pitch to knot the score at three. However, UTSA took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when first baseman Justin Brandt cleared the left field fence with a solo home run.

UTSA extended their lead with a four-run seventh inning to take an 8-3 lead that would prove to be the final margin.

Rice picked up his second win of the season for the Roadrunners, limiting Purdue to three hits and two runs during his 6.1 innings of work.

Sophomore Billy Lester, making his second career start and first since March 13, 2001, pitched 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs. Lefthander Brian Karpel relieved Lester with 0.2 innings of work and Dustin Glant pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The Boilermakers and Roadrunners play the rubber game of the three-game set Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. (CT). Sophomore Mitch Pruemer is scheduled to take the mound in his Purdue debut.

-Daniel Underwood extended his hit streak to 14 games, dating to 4/29/01 at Indiana.
-Billy Lester made his second career start, his first since 3/13/01 vs. San Diego, and threw a career-high 6.1 innings.
