WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Having three wins under his belt was not enough for Scott Mayer of the Purdue men's tennis team. The Boilermaker junior ended his three-match win streak today after falling in a fourth-round prequalifying match at the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga.
Mayer was losing 7-5, 4-0 to Marcus Hornung of Baylor before retiring due to elbow soreness.
Purdue assistant coach Derek Myers thought it was best for Mayer to not risk further injury. Mayer is slated to compete in the 64-team qualifying portion of the doubles tournament with senior Dan Swan beginning Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Purdue duo is ranked 28th in the nation.
"Scott wants to play 100 percent on Tuesday," Myers said. "He does not want to take any risks with his elbow."
Although Mayer did not get a win today, Myers still applauded his efforts.
"Anytime you can get wins at this level of national competition, it shows promise," Myers said. "Scott handled himself very well and is ready to play doubles on Tuesday."
Mayer, one of 256 players in the prequalifying draw, was two wins away from landing one of eight spots in the 64-player qualifying portion of the tournament.
