WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Scott Mayer, a junior on the Purdue men's tennis team, won his third-round prequalifying match at the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga., today. He is one of 32 players out of the original 256 players to advance to the fourth round.
Mayer beat Aleksey Bubis of Arkansas 7-5, 6-2.
Purdue assistant coach Derek Myers applauded Mayer's performance.
"This match was a big step for Scott," Myers said. "He didn't start out unbelievably great, but he finished much stronger than he began. That's the sign of a true champion.
"If Scott continues to take those types of strides, he could stick around here a few more days."
Mayer will play on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m.
Mayer is fighting for one of eight spots into the 64-player qualifying portion of the tournament, which will run Oct. 9 and 10. The main draw begins on Thursday, Oct. 11.
