Mayer Advances To Third Round Of Prequalifying At ITA All-Americans

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Scott Mayer, a junior on the Purdue men's tennis team, won two prequalifying matches at the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga., today. He is one of 64 players out of the original 256 players to advance to the third round.

Mayer defeated Virginia Tech's Saber Kadiri 6-2, 7-5 in the first round. Then he defeated Joel Reckaway of Nebraska 6-2, 6-3. Mayer will meet Arkansas' Aleksey Bubis in the third round on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Junior Andrew Wakefield won his first-round match over Arkansas' Tiago Azevedo, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. But Wakefield's fortune turned in the second round, as he dropped a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision to Zlatko Stupausky of South Alabama.

Senior Dan Swan won his opening-round match against Furman's Chris Henderson, 7-6, 7-6. In the second round, however, Swan fell 6-3, 6-4 to Patrick Chucri of Mississippi.

Should Mayer advance through the third round, he will continue in the prequalifying portion of the tournament, which runs through Monday, Oct. 8. Only eight out of 256 players will advance to the 64-player qualifying tournament that begins on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The main draw begins on Thursday, Oct. 11.
