WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior Laith Al-Agba and junior Carl McCafferty's bid for an ITA Regional championship ended with a quarterfinal loss in East Lansing, Mich., today.
Al-Agba and McCafferty fell 9-7 to Notre Dame's 34th-ranked and third-seeded duo of Javier Taborga and Casey Smith. The Boilermakers had advanced with a first-round bye, a second-round victory over Michigan's Rolf and Shay, and a third-round win over Ohio State's eighth-seeded pair of Casey and Wurtzman.
Despite the loss, Purdue coach Tim Madden was pleased with how Al-Agba and McCafferty fought throughout the tournament.
"Laith and Carl competed hard but came up just a little short," Madden said. "It was a good tournament overall for them. They played with confidence and didn't let up the whole way through."
Purdue's final fall tournament, the Big Ten Singles Championships, will be played Nov. 10-12 in East Lansing.
