Men's Tennis Doubles Team Advances To Quarterfinals Of ITA Regionals

West Lafayette, Ind.- Purdue junior Carl McCafferty and senior Laith Al-Agba advanced to the quarterfinal round in doubles at the ITA Omni Hotel Midwest Regionals hosted by Michigan State on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Al-Agba and McCafferty, who received a first-round bye, defeated Michigan's Rolf and Shay 8-6 in the second round. The Boilermaker duo advanced to the third round of doubles and defeated No. 8-seeded Casey and Wurtzman of Ohio State 9-8 (5).

On Sunday, Al-Agba and McCafferty will take on Notre Dame's Javier Taborga and Casey Smith.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden is confident that the junior and senior will compete well in tomorrow's doubles competiton.

"They believe they can win the tournament," Madden said. "They are playing with confidence and are both coming up with big shots.

"Laith is a controlling player and has a feisty attitude. Carl is coming up with big serves and is taking over pressure situations to go after the win."

In singles play, junior Andrew Wakefield, the 24th seed, advanced to the round of 16 before losing to Illinois' Phil Stolt 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the third round. Wakefield defeated Michigan State's Chris Mitchell 7-6 (4), 6-7(5), 7-6 (3) in the second round.

Wakefield teamed up with senior Derek Miller to compete in doubles play. After receiving a first-round bye, they won their second-round match against Valparaiso's Hill and Vuko, 8-3. The Boilermaker team lost to Northwestern's Hanus and Jenkins 9-8 (3) in the third round.

In other action, freshman Sounak Chatterjee lost to Michigan State's Andrew Formanczyk 6-0, 6-1 in singles. After receiving a first-round bye, junior Scott Mayer lost to Depaul's Andy Michael 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Troy Havens was defeated by Avery Ticer of Minnesota 6-2, 6-4 in singles play. Junior Scott Mayer and senior Dan Swan lost to Louisville's Conley and Lien 8-4 in the second round of doubles play.
