WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Junior Andrew Wakefield won his singles and doubles matches in the first day of the Omni Hotel ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan State on Oct. 26.
Wakefield, who received a first-round bye, defeated the Spartans' Chris Mitchell 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) in the second round. In doubles, Wakefield and senior Derek Miller beat Valparaiso's Hill and Vuko 8-3 in the first round.
On Saturday, Wakefield will play Ohio State's Vince Ng. Wakefield and Miller will take on Northwestern's Hanus and Jenkins, seeded 10th.
In other action on Friday, senior Laith Al-Agba lost 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-1 to Iowa's Justin Gaard. Junior Scott Mayer fell 6-2, 6-4 to DePaul's Andy Michael in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. Sophomore Troy Havens lost 6-2, 6-4 to Minnesota's Avery Ticer. Freshman Sounak Chatterjee lost 6-0, 6-1 to Michigan State's Andrew Formanczyk.
Fourth-seeded Mayer and senior Dan Swan, and Al-Agba and junior Carl McCafferty will begin doubles play today following first-round byes.
