Men's Tennis Succeeds In First Day Of Boilermaker Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis players Laith Al-Agba and Carl McCafferty went undefeated in the first day of play in the Boilermaker Invitational today.

Al-Agba and McCafferty teamed up to win the A Flight Doubles crown, and both won first-round singles matches.

The senior and junior were just two Purdue players who earned praise from head coach Tim Madden.

"We expect Carl to do what he did today," Madden said. "He came out ready to play in singles. Both he and Laith were very decisive and played with a competitive edge."

"They've risen to the occasion," Madden said of his entire team. "They were very mature tennis players today because they got themselves ready to play. They came out took care of their positions."

Al-Agba and McCafferty won their doubles title with an 8-4 victory over Western Michigan's Maarschalk and Pathanjali. The Boilermaker pair won two matches to advance to the championship, posting a 3-0 record on the day.

In singles, Al-Agba defeated Iowa's Justin Gaard 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. He will play Ravishankar Pathanjali of Western Michigan in the second round tomorrow.

McCafferty beat Indiana State's Dalibor Mihajlovic 6-3, 6-3. He will face Michael Findling tomorrow.

Sophomore Troy Havens won 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 against Hunter Skogman of Iowa. He will take on Western Michigan's Ryan Maarschalk in the second round.

Also winning in singles was senior Derek Miller, who rallied from a set down to defeat Indiana State's David O'Connell 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. He will face Erik Lindroos of Western Michigan tomorrow.

Freshman Sounak Chatterjee was the lone Boilermaker to fall in singles, dropping a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision to Western Michigan's Christian Brattstrom.

In doubles, Chatterjee and Havens advanced to the championship of the B Flight but lost 8-4 to O'Connell and Mihajlovic of Indiana State.

The Boilermaker Invitational will wrap up tomorrow, beginning at 9 a.m. Play is expected to begin at the Lafayette Sports center, but will move outdoors should the weather clear.
