WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior Laith Al-Agba and junior Andrew Wakefield both won singles and doubles matches in the last day of competition at the Notre Dame Tom Fallon Invitational today. As a team, the Boilermakers finished the three-day tournament with 15 singles and seven doubles victories.
Purdue head coach Tim Madden, who went into the weekend hoping to use it as a learning tool, came away with a good feel for the Boilermakers' progress, as well as what they must do to get better.
"Our focus was on the process of playing instead of the outcome of matches," Madden said. "We played some teams that outmatched us, but we showed improvement all the way through. It was great to see that in some of the matches, we were able to get into not just dictating play, but executing. There is no doubt that if we keep doing what we're doing, the execution will continue to come."
Al-Agba and Wakefield were the two Boilermakers who executed today. Al-Agba defeated Michigan State's Mike Jonckheerre 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 in the hidden dual format. Wakefield, playing at No. 1 for the second time in the tournament, picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Spartans' Jimmy McGuire.
Also winning in singles was freshman Sounak Chatterjee, who beat Michigan State's Adam Hourani 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
Al-Agba and Wakefield paired for an 8-6 doubles win over Indiana State's Brajkovic and Vidovic at No. 1. Chatterjee and junior Carl McCafferty also teamed for a doubles victory, defeating a mixed team of Dalibor Mihajlovic of Indiana State and Tim Giattina of Notre Dame, 8-2.
Purdue's next team competition is the Boilermaker Invitational, which will be held Oct. 13 and 14 in West Lafayette. Prior to that, however, some Purdue players will compete in the ITA All-American Tournament in Stone Mountain, Ga., beginning Saturday, Oct. 6.
