WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team met with more success on Day Two at the Notre Dame Tom Fallon Invitational. After winning three singles matches in the first day of competition on Friday, the Boilermakers rebounded to win nine matches today.
In the hidden dual format, Purdue nearly pulled off a sweep of William & Mary, winning six of seven singles matches. Senior Derek Miller (No. 2), junior Scott Mayer (No. 3), junior Andrew Wakefield (No. 4), sophomore Troy Havens (No. 5), freshman Sounak Chatterjee (No. 6) and senior Laith Al-Agba (No. 7) all beat their Brave counterparts.
The tide turned a bit against Indiana State, with the Sycamores taking four of five matches. Miller, Mayer, Wakefield and junior Carl McCafferty, all fell victim to their intrastate opponents. Havens, however, came through with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Dalibor Mihajlovic at No. 6 to prevent the sweep.
Al-Agba and Chatterjee also won singles matches in the afternoon. Al-Agba defeated Butler's Jimmy Borendame 6-1, 6-4. Chatterjee dismantled Notre Dame's T Moss 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Miller and Wakefield paired for a 9-8 (7-3) upset of Notre Dame's 30th-ranked Haddock-Morales and Talarico. Chatterjee and senior Dan Swan defeated the Irish's Laflin and Scott, 9-7.
Purdue coach Tim Madden, now in his eighth year at the Boilermaker helm, has been pleased with his team's performance to date, especially considering the competition it has faced.
"We are glad we're finding out what it's like to play some of the best teams in the nation," Madden said. "Our focus right now is not as much on outcome as it is to find out how the guys respond to different positions."
Three players Madden has been particularly impressed with are Wakefield, Havens and Chatterjee.
"This weekend, Andrew has gained more confidence than he's ever had," Madden said. "Troy has shown off some quickness and a more forward-aggressive game. And Sounak is improving in every match."
Swan, the team captain and a member of the nation's 28th-ranked doubles team with Mayer, would like to see today's early singles triumphs continue, matching Purdue's recent doubles success.
"We need to improve singles play," Swan said. "We are one of the best teams in the country with doubles. We need to find a way to carry our doubles into singles. We need to come out and fight for every point."
Purdue will return to the court tomorrow, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m., taking on Michigan State in singles. The Boilermakers will conclude the weekend with doubles against Indiana State at 1 p.m.
