WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Brandon Hance threw two touchdown passes to John Standeford, and Joey Harris had a 58-yard scoring run as Purdue beat Akron 33-14 on Saturday.

Hance was 21-for-37 for 252 yards and two interceptions. The redshirt freshman struggled to find consistency, overthrowing some receivers but remaining on target during scoring drives.

Hance helped Purdue to a 10-7 lead, going 5-for-6 for 57 yards on a nine-play scoring drive. He completed passes of 18 and 23 yards to Standeford before hitting him with a 3-yarder for the TD.

Harris' 58-yard run - the longest run by a Purdue running back since 1999 - came on the second play of the second quarter.

Purdue's defense was picked up apart by Akron's Charlie Frye in the first quarter. Frye was 7-for-11 for 99 yards and had a run of 17 yards in the quarter.

Frye threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Matt Zuercher with 11:51 left in the quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Zips had 115 yards of total offense in the first quarter, but Purdue's defense contained them after that. The Zips had only 37 yards of offense in the third quarter.

Akron's only other sustained drive came on a 9-play, 65-yard drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Brandon Payne with 8:41 left in the game.

Hance threw his second touchdown pass to Standeford, a 34-yarder, with 12:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. Hance and Standeford nearly combined for a third touchdown pass but an 18-yard reception ended with Standeford down on the 2.

Harris rushed for his second touchdown of the game on the next play.

Standeford had five receptions for 96 yards.

Purdue's Travis Dorsch kicked field goals of 27 and 44 yards.

The Boilermakers original home opener scheduled for last week against Notre Dame was moved to Dec. 1 following the terrorist attacks on the East Coast.
