Men's Tennis Improves On Singles Play To Stop Penn State

April 14, 2001

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After a 5-2 loss to Ohio State on Friday, the men's tennis team felt it had to improve on its singles play. The Boilermakers did just that and it helped them to defeat Penn State 6-1.

"I feel much better about our performance today," head coach Tim Madden. "The fact that three of our players did better in their second set than their first proved they took the message to heart. We were much more confident today and we bounced back well from the Ohio State loss."

The Boilermakers swept doubles action with decisive wins at the No. 1-3 positions. Singles action was near perfect with Andrew Wakefield, Derek Miller and Laith Al-Agba improving from their first to second set. Wakefield defeated Matt Frakes 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Miller beat Todd Stecko 7-5, 6-2. And at No. 6, Laith Al-Agba pulled off a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Brad Nudell.

At the No. 1 position, senior Jason Marshall, who played his last regular season match on the Varsity Tennis Courts, defeated Jamie Griesh 6-4, 7-6. Carl McCafferty also was victorious over Steven Westhuyzen at No. 4 (6-1, 6-4). Scott Mayer shutout Matt Nielsen in the first set, but could not hold off the attack as Nielsen went on to defeat him at the No. 2 position.

The Boilermakers will return to action next weekend when they travel to Michigan to play the Wolverines and Michigan State.
