MEN'S TENNIS STOP NORTHWESTERN, 4-3 For Immediate Release March 31, 2001
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team defeated Northwestern 4-3 Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
"Northwestern was a tough team to beat," head coach Tim Madden said. "Today we came out and could not have played better in doubles."
Once again, the Boilermakers turned out excellent doubles play to sweep the three matches to win the point. Madden attributed Purdue's success to the fans.
"It was great to finally be outside," Madden said. "It is difficult to draw fans in the Lafayette Sports Center, so it was nice to see the support of fans and of recent alums that came back for the match."
In singles action, Jason Marshall defeated Jackie Jenkins 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 position. Carl McCafferty won at No. 3 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over Joost Hol. But it was Andrew Wakefield who sealed the win with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Jamie Sahara at No. 4.
"Andrew took the match when he won the tiebreaker," Madden said. "The match was on the line but he managed to stay focused."
The Boilermakers will face Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts. If weather becomes inclimate, action will take place at the Lafayette Sports Center.
