WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team lost its second 4-3 match of the season on Sunday to Middle Tennessee State. With the loss the Boilermakers fall to 1-2 on the season.
"We need to learn to thing about what's happening on the court," head coach Tim Madden said. "We have to stop just playing not to lose and decided to play to win. Unfortunately we learned the hard way this weekend against two equally matched teams.
The Boilermakers swept the doubles portion of the match with wins at the No. 1 through 3 positions. Sophomore Scott Mayer defeated Oliver Foreman 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 singles spot. At No. 5, classmate Andrew Wakefield picked up a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Mark Pellerin.
For the second consecutive day the match came down to the No. 6 singles position. Rookie Troy Havens battled to the third set, but was defeated 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 by Trevor Short.
The Boilermakers will look to get things back on track when they face Butler on February 17 at 1 p.m. at the Lafayette Sports Center.
