Men's Tennis Defeats Ball State

Feb. 24, 2001

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team defeated Ball State 6-1 in Muncie, Ind., today. The victory improved the Boilermakers' record to 4-2.

Purdue got things going by winning the doubles point. Junior Derek Miller and sophomore Scott Mayer delivered an 8-3 win at No. 3, while junior Laith Al-Agba and sophomore Carl McCafferty rallied from two breaks down to win 9-7 at No. 2.

In singles, senior Jason Marshall (No. 1), McCafferty (No. 2), Mayer (No. 3), Miller (No. 4) and freshman Troy Havens (No. 6) all won in straight sets.

Head coach Tim Madden had plenty of compliments to go around.

"This was a good day," Madden said. "Our doubles play was in order, as it has been all season, but we also played singles with an edge. I'm most proud of the fact that we played so well in both singles and doubles on the same day."

Individually, Madden complimented three Boilermakers for their efforts. The first was Miller, who turned back Jason Pressel 6-2, 6-3.

"Derek played as smart and as tough as I've ever seen," Madden said. "I'm glad he's back on track."

Madden also lauded Havens, who defeated Kevin Burnett 7-6 (5), 6-2.

"Troy improved so much mentally today," Madden said. "I'm so proud of him. I can see his confidence building."

Finally, Madden recognized McCafferty, who knocked off Andrew Seni 6-4, 6-4, in addition to helping clinch the doubles point.

"Carl was absolutely clutch with his return of serve in the doubles point," Madden said. "And in singles, he really dissected his opponent."

Purdue, ranked 51st in the latest ITA poll, next plays host to No. 26 Notre Dame at the Lafayette Sports Center on Feb. 25. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
