Baseball Drops 7-0 Decision To Ball State

The Purdue baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to in-state rival Ball State in the opening game of the Governor's College Classic, held at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.

The Boilermakers received another impressive outing from senior pitcher Ben Quick, who pitched seven solid innings, yielding just two runs and striking out nine batters. In 16 innings pitched this season, Quick has struck out 18 batters. He falls to 1-1 on the season.

The game was scoreless with two outs in the seventh inning, before Ball State took a 2-0 lead off a pinch-hit home run from Adam Metzler, also scoring Doug Boone.

Quick was relieved by freshman Billy Lester, who pitched the eighth inning, struck out one batter. Senior transfer Daniel Hernandez made his Boilermaker debut, pitching the ninth inning, striking out two batters.

The Boilermakers (2-2) return to action tomorrow when they face Illinois State. Purdue faced Illinois State twice last season, winning both games. Dave Gassner will make his second start of the year for the Boilermakers. First pitch for tomorrow's game
