WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior Jason Marshall won the 2001 Big Ten Singles Championship on Monday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The title would be the second in Marshall's career at Purdue.
"We are extremely proud of Jason," Boilermaker head coach Tim Madden said. "He stayed focused throughout the weekend and found a way to get the job done. He has always been an great player, but I am proud to say I am now seeing him grow into an exceptional leader."
Marshall, currently ranked No. 29 in the nation, picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ohio State's Phil Metz in the quarterfinal round of action. The win allowed him to meet Penn State's Jamie Gresh. Marshall won 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3. In the finals, Marshall, a No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated the No. 1 seed Harsh Mankad (Minnesota) 6-1, 6-3.
"Jason displayed an excellent sense of mental toughness in the finals," Madden said. "The team was estastic with his win."
Marshall, who was the 1999 Big Ten Singles Champion, and the Boilermaker squad will begin dual action on January 27 when it faces Western Michigan at the Lafayette Sports Center.
