BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue volleyball team could not hold off intrastate rival Indiana as the Hoosiers swept Purdue 15-3, 15-8, 15-10. With the loss, the Boilermakers fell to 9-11 (1-7 Big Ten), while Indiana improved to 12-6 (3-5 Big Ten).
The Boilermakers hit at a clip of .118 (32-17-127), while Indiana managed to hit at a clip of .328 (58-16-128). Purdue was outblocked 6-3 by the Hoosiers, which concerned head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer.
"I think we did a poor job at the net tonight," Hulsmeyer said. "We go over blocking drills each week in practice, but executing the skills in an actual match is a different story. We know what's coming but we can't do anything to stop it."
Purdue could not stop the Hoosiers early on in the match. The Boilermakers recorded seven errors and only three kills on 19 attempts in Game 1 for a negative .211 hitting percentage in Game 1. Indiana had only one error on 12 kills, hitting at a clip of .647 (12-1-17) and claimed a 15-3 win.
Purdue could not stop the Hoosiers, who went on to take Games 2 and 3 with little effort.
Senior Julie Doud led Purdue with eight kills on the night, while freshman Joanna Lowry tossed in eight. Junior Jennie Williams recorded 13 digs to lead the Boilermakers, while senior setter Melissa Risher contributed 11.
The Boilermakers will host No. 7 Wisconsin on October 20 and Northwestern on October 21. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on WAZY 1410 AM and www.purduesports.com.
